‘Upar Wala Sab Dekh Raha Hai’- Deep Learning Model to Identify Violent Individuals

‘Upar Wala Sab Dekh Raha Hai’  (“He” is Watching Everything)

Overview :

Deep learning model to identify violent individuals in a crowd using pattern recognition

Drones to facilitate the efficient operation of the model

With initial results of up to 95% accuracy, the project is promising

Introduction :

Lately, pattern recognition has become a hot topic in deep learning. Researchers from the University of Cambridge, India’s National Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science have collaborated and come up with what they call ‘Eye in the sky’ which is a pattern recognition AI to identify violent people in a crowd.

From delivering parcels to saving a life, from capturing beautiful images to a stealth weapon in the military, drones have become ubiquitous. This is an application of drones in surveillance with this one-of-a-kind deep learning model. The system is set up on a drone which provides uninterrupted surveillance.Details are available in the research paper titled,  ‘Eye in the Sky: Real-Time Drone Surveillance System (DSS) for Violent Individuals Identification using ScatterNet Hybrid Deep Learning Network’.

How it Works :

A drone is equipped with a camera with an embedded deep learning model. The drone now acts like a ‘super drone’ to effectively identify potential troublemakers in the crowd. It involves a series of acts happening behind the scenes which are discussed below:

First, the model uses a pyramid network to identify humans from aerial shots taken by the camera (probably similar to this picture here).

Then, the region is identified and this data is used by ScatterNet Hybrid Deep Learning network for human pose estimation.

The orientation between the limbs of the finalized pose are then used to identify violent nature of any individual.

So Let’s Summarise :

The initial results of the system are promising. When put to test, the model scaled up to 95% accuracy. Having said that, in a frame of multiple people the accuracy dropped to 80%. There is still a lot of room for improvement as the system is still in a very nascent stage and the chances of an updated model with more accuracy is quite high. There are a gamut of applications for ‘Eye in the sky’. This is an amazing example of AI enabled facial recognition and the extent to which it can penetrate into our social circle.

So reach out to your friends and say, ‘upar wala sab dekh raha hai!’
