In today’s world of data overload, artificial intelligence has gained quite some popularity, with top companies spending billions of dollars on research of various applications of AI. It is clear that AI is going to change the world and take over many jobs that currently are being done by humans, for example, driving, mining, assembly line workers etc.
And this brings us to quite a controversial topic, Is AI taking over all our jobs? Or is it creating new ones?
At the 217 Web Summit in Lisbon, when Sophia, a humanoid robot powered by AI, joked “we will take your jobs”, behind the laughter of 60,000 attendees was a realization this could be a reality sooner than they think.
The answer to this question is not a direct yes or a no but it’s much more complicated than that. One one hand, yes, AI is going to take over most of the jobs that put food onto the plates of humans as of today. On the other hand, it is going to create millions of jobs in data science and associated fields like banking, healthcare, retail, etc. So really it’s just about an individual’s perspective.
It is estimated that by the year 2020, AI would have created about 2.3 million job openings while replacing 1.8 million jobs. It is also estimated that the number of new jobs created by AI and AI powered tools would reach 2 million by 2025.
India alone is going to see a significant rise in jobs in data science, machine learning and AI.
According to a recent report by Great Learning, published in the Economic Times there are currently 50,000+ job vacancies in India in the field of data science. And this is due to the lack of qualified professionals for the role. Read the entire report here.
Constant learning and skill building will play a critical role in preparing a workforce ready to deal with new technologies. Investing in human capital is important for companies to develop skills in employees who are required to work with modern technology.
According to a survey by research firm Gartner, out of 10 lakh registered companies in India, 75% have invested or are going to invest in data science and machine learning which is just going to create more jobs.
Recently, Business Today published an article about India in which they state that in the next 5 years, 54 million Indians will hold jobs unheard of today. And some of these jobs and roles are quite fascinating. Here is an example of what new jobs in the future might look like
1) Man-machine teaming manager :
This role involves combining the strengths of humans and AI/software to create efficient hybrid teams to solve business problems
2) AI Business development manager
There is still one thing AI cannot do, and that is sell to humans. People still want to speak to other humans when buying something. Hence, this role involves working with sales and marketing teams to position AI services for customers and partners.
3) Data Detective
The job will entail generating meaningful business answers and recommendations from studying date generated by Internet of Things end-points, devices, sensors, biometric monitors, traditional computing infrastructure, next-gen fog, mesh, edge, neural capabilities, etc. Currently, much of the data collected in these areas goes un-examined.
4) Bring your own IT Facilitator (BYOITF)
While the role involves creating a work environment that exploits digital trends and encourages shadow-IT innovation, the goal of a good BYOITF would be to provide business users with the flexibility to compile their own mobile and collaborative environments. Imagine creating an automated self-service platform that lets users select the desired applications as well as build virtual assistants to help employees work better and smarter without compromising data control, security, governance and compliance.
5) AI assisted healthcare technician
The role of an healthcare technician would be showing up at patients’ doorsteps to examine, diagnose and administer appropriate treatment, aided by cutting-edge technology and remotely accessible doctors. With the help of AI, even those with a nursing degree will be able to perform certain surgeries.
It is quite obvious that AI is going to change the world for the better, to make everyday tasks easier, and more efficient and free up some time for us human to focus on more tasks that require more skill. Hence, knowing that AI is going to be the future and create much more jobs, its up-to us to learn new skills and technologies and help speed up this process. Not to mention, the new jobs are going to be unique, interesting and one of a kind!
